Summary/Abstract: Problems existing on the borderline between archival science and that of law are important features of the professional workshop of an archivist and should play an important role in the preparation for this profession. The contribution presents notes to topical demands in this field of work and to the possibilities to fulfil them within the Polish conditions. These notes were formulated under the experience from the research ongoing at the Marie Curie Sklodowska University in Lublin. The legal features in the professional practice of archivists are possible to divide into two groups: the first group contains those features dealing with the contents and form of archival documents i. e. connected with the historical period in which they originated and were archived. The second group comprises standards containing principles for functioning of present archives esp. gathering documents and making them accessible. Using all these standards either historical or currently valuable requires overall knowledge of legal institutions and principles for interpretation of legal instruments. It does not mean changing an archivist into a lawyer but it is impossible for the archivist to ignore legal standards and skills connected with the law.
