Summary/Abstract: Gustáv Husák’s character had made a substantial mark in the modern history of Czechoslovakia and we can even say that this communist politician took an active role in its portrayal. He had been active since his youth and in the interwar period he belonged among the main faces of young Slovak communists. During the WWII he became one of the representatives and organizers of activities of the communist party and left-wing resistance movement in Slovakia. After the end of the war, he had held numerous important posts, finally he became a victim together with others in a fabricated political trial. His great ambitions took him back to political course of events, the right moment seemed to be in connection with the suppression of the reviving process of the so-called Prague Spring. In 1969, Gustáv Husák stood at the head of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and became the most powerful man in the state, later he added the post of president of the republic. Until 1987, when he was replaced by Miloš Jakeš at the head of KSČ, it was Husák who managed and determined the functioning of the state and its direction. This period is brought closer in archival materials which are part of the fond of KSČ-ÚV. In spite of the fact that the circumstances of their origin and purpose require the utmost critical approach, these documents represent an inestimable source for studying intrastate development in Czechoslovakia, its economy, armed forces, and primarily international policy.
