Summary/Abstract: This paper gives insight into some of the ways of word-formation in English, i.e. in, abbreviating the existing lexemes. The most frequent ways of abbreviating words in English are initialisms, acronyms, clippings and blends. The se types of lexical abbreviations are used in everyday speech, current political events, business communication and correspondence, which has been supported by the corpus presented in this paper. The examples of these types of abbreviations are listedin the tables. The aim of this paper was to present abbreviating of existing lexemes in vocabulary as a type of word-formation in English, i.e. to show certain general characteristics and tendencies specific to abbreviating words as a type of word-formation and to list the abbreviations as the result of such a type of word-formation.
