Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the research of the relationship of the Slovaks with the theatre, which was carried out by the Institute for Culture Research of the National Centre of Culture in Bratislava in late 2003 on a representative population sample, was to facilitate trend monitoring based on a comparison with a similar survey conducted in 1995. Having that in mind, two findings are especially vital (and of concern): a drop in the number of theatre-goers visiting a theatre performance during one year by approximately 10 per cent and increasingly, musical productions have been more frequented at the expense of drama. Among other useful facts reported are those, which indicate that the group of population, which attends theatre performances at least sporadically, prefers more exacting artistic activities and that among the positive factors is an individual's active involvement in amateur theatre, whereby the accessibility of a theatrical performance is among the negative factors.
