About the Power of Singing Together: A Demand for Change

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the use of collective singing for socio-political purposeson the example of two historical events: the 1988 Singing Revolution, andthe 2020–2021 protests against the rigged elections in Belarus. One of these purposesis building/strengthening national identity, the other – expressing demandsfor change. The mechanisms used to achieve the desired effect are contained in thetraditional song functions.
