PERSONIFICATION METAPHORS IN KRLEŽA’S NOVEL ON THE EDGE OF MIND AND ITS TRANSLATION INTO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Summary/Abstract: According to the general principles of the conceptual metaphor theory and the metaphor translation theory, both, the differences, as well as the resemblances between conceptual and linguistic personification metaphors will be analyzed using the original text in the Croatian language and its translation into the English language. A special emphasis is put on literary-textual communication between two typologically different languages from the point of view of the universal and culturally specific conceptual and linguistic metaphors, i.e., their linguistic and cultural differences. Namely, the cognitive linguistic contrastive analysis of the conceptual metaphor is the best way to indicate issues in presenting literary metaphors, as well as the social and cultural differences together with other aspects of different languages and the ways in which these metaphors are realized. Analyzing examples of metaphors in the original text and its translation, we will examine to what extent metaphorical expressions remain metaphorical after translating into another language, and how cognitive linguistics and the science of translation deal with language and thought.
