Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of the relationship of parenthood and economic activity of childcare holders. The aim of the paper is to find out the real mother’s motivation to work (mothers taking care of children up to 3 years of age) and to quantify the proportion of mothers who are discouraged by the current system to return to employment. Using the decision-making function of the mother and the constructed indicators evaluating cost of entering the labour market has shown that mothers entering the labour market are confronted with very high additional costs which do not cover their income from employment and parental benefits. The estimated amount of potential salary which would encourage women to return to work reaches in some cases up to four times the median salary of women in the region.
