Summary/Abstract: By using the regression analysis, the study compares the efficiency of public and private enterprises in the wood industry (growing and harvesting wood); the study also answers the question, whether there are any differences between the privately and publicly owned enterprises. The analysis assesses the quality of the enterprise management; the authors presume that higher productivity of the enterprises mentioned above is not achieved by globally devastating forest vegetation. The authors do not agree with the notion that private owners, gentry and the church are not responsible forest owners either; the authors prove that the results of the privatization process in other European countries point out that private forest ownership is a suitable state. The authors come to the conclusion that public forest ownership itself appears to be unsuitable for long-term forest sustainability and also in the following aspects: forest quality, afforestation and even the market factor.
