Summary/Abstract: The processes of population ageing have relevant social and economic consequences; therefore the effort is legitimate to apply a large scale of indicators and methods to get to know them. The effort to make a synthetic assessment of the level of population ageing has become topical as well. Using the point method and the method of a standardized variable, 11 partial indicators of age structures of 39 European countries have been used in the synthesis. Several countries in Western and Northern Europe have seen older age structures (earlier fertility decrease, longer life expectancy). In Central, Eastern and mainly Southern Europe younger age groups have been identified (higher fertility, lower life expectancy).
