Summary/Abstract: In 2022, 25 years have passed since the launch of the rural renewal programmein the Opolskie Voivodeship, and thus the initiation of this rural development processanimated by the local community in Poland. In the context of a quarter of a centuryof functioning and development of this idea in Poland, the article reflects on the currentplace of rural renewal in national and regional development policies and programmessupporting rural areas. This issue was considered through the prism of: the rootsof rural renewal in rural support models, the development of voivodeship rural renewalprogrammes, as well as its anchoring in national and regional strategies and relations withthe activities of programmes financed from European funds. The inference was basedon a query and content analysis of the national literature on the subject of rural renewaland strategic documents at the central and regional level. In the light of the obtained results, rural renewal in Poland – despite the involvement of rural communities and the interestof scientists as well as modern theoretical foundations – still occupies an insufficient placein the system of development policies. It is poorly anchored in current national and regionalstrategies and has been largely overshadowed by activities subsidised from EU funds, whichhas had an impact on the current scope of voivodeship rural renewal programmes. Itsposition in development policies reflects a broader problem – insufficient considerationof rural priorities and perception of rural areas mainly through the prism of peripheralityand marginalisation.
