Research in the Field of Rural Renewal at the University of Lodz: An Attempt at Synthesis

Summary/Abstract: In the last 25 years, the issues of implementing rural renewal programmeshave been one of the key issues undertaken in the field of rural development research,especially in the European context. Scientific works were carried out by representativesof various research centers and representing various points of view. For over a decade, thisissue has been present in the research of geographers and sociologists from the Universityof Lodz. The experience gained during research work, both in the Łódź Voivodeship and ona national scale, gives the opportunity to take a holistic and critical look at the theoreticaland methodological issues as well as practical rural renewal. In the article, we highlight threeimportant issues around which we focus our thoughts, i.e. the contribution of rural renewalto research on local development, the selective nature of programmes and building a senseof place. The results of the synthesis of research conducted at the University of Lodz showthat we are dealing with a kind of saturation with this issue. We point out that in the ruralrenewal not only its definition is fluid, but that as an idea it is full of paradoxes of a spatial,social and methodical nature, but at the same time it strives to settle accounts, draw bindingconclusions for the future, and quite possibly naturally give way to new interests, challengesand interpretations of the countryside and rurality.
