Summary/Abstract: Power failures are one of the most serious threats to run a region or a state. The power failure threatens the health and lives of the population and is accompanied by a number of secondary effects, on both other energy resources, water and food etc. To be prepared for large power failures, it is necessary to identify the critical preparedness of every single facilities, involved in saving lives. In the research aimed at the preparedness of social care institutions one part dealt with hospitals as the institutions primarily specialising on saving lives. The aim of the work is focused on finding the state of preparedness of hospitals in the Region of South Bohemia in case of the power failure. All documents were obtained by the controlled interviews in various hospitals in the Region of South Bohemia from February to April 2012, having spoken with the people working in positions of safety techniques and energy resources. The obtained results provided a basis for a further research in this area. The results point to the current issue of emergency supplies. The results show unambiguously the sufficient preparedness of hospitals which is secured mainly by emergency sources of E1 type but there is the necessary investment into the recovery of the system as a whole.
