Summary/Abstract: The historical romance novel series known collectively as Bridgerton has become one of the most popular representatives of its genre thanks to the Netflix adaptation. The paper analyses the poetics of the historical romance genre in its entirety using this series of novels as an example; due to its distinctly different poetics, an analysis of the adaptation is not attempted. The paper analyses the “realism” (distancing itself unequivocally from the word) of a historical romance through the classification of modes offered by Northrop Frye, along with formal elements like space and time, the work’s social context, its structure, and the narrator. Finally, special attention is given to individual characters and their roles, to find their common characteristics and examine the validity of establishing character categories that could be applied to the genre as a whole. The aim of the paper is to define a basic terminology and approach to the analysis of historical romance, to highlight the differences between this type of fiction and the documentarist history within which the work takes place, as well as forming a foundation for further analyses, both within literary criticism and as part of cultural studies.
