Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to summarize the current knowledge concerning the problems of lifestyle diseases (diseases of civilization) in relation to the health at the international and national level, and a critical reflection of the development of health policy in relation to the economic and social sphere from the perspective of their impact on the health. Generally, the diseases of civilization denote a group of diseases that most commonly occur in the developed countries and are - to a great extent - the result of modern lifestyles. Obesity and cardiovascular diseases seem to be highly serious in the connection with the economic and social stress. Increasing morbidity and mortality related to the lifestyle diseases affect still younger and younger population increasingly, and these might have been economically active for decades otherwise. Such limits of the economically active population can affect the entire society because manifestations of the disease are mainly connected with the high costs of medical care.
