Summary/Abstract: Petre Andrei's political work (his writings, but also his performances as a parliamentarian and minister) is usually seen as the "heroic destiny" of the intellectual who chooses to serve his country by getting involved in its administration, instead of hiding in the folds of sterile criticism. In all this veritable political hagiography (which includes his anti-fascist attitude, his reformist actions in public administration and education, as well as his tragic death), there is little analysis of the context in which, from December 1938 to July 1940, Petre Andrei played politics "out of fear", accepting not only a ministerial position but also participating in the creation of the Party of the Nation - "a small and totalitarian party", the instrument through which the royal dictatorship hoped to save Romania from territorial dismemberment. Strangely enough, under the dome of "Carlism", Petre Andrei had to put up with the presence of his old ideological enemies, the Legionaries; a deeply human fear became the motive for his political action, replacing the ideal of the spiritual nation, which had animated him in the 1930s
