Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of investigation of one of the private orthoepic subsystems – of a subsystem of men’s and women’s middle name. In the history of its development both in planes of scientific research, and normative one clearly distinguishes two periods. The period up to the mid 80-ies XX century distinguishes the explicit regulation of the conditions of use of formulas naming, including middle name, determination of the rules of pronunciation patronymic names (as defined by R. I. Аvanesov in the manual «Russian literary pronunciation»), the balance between codification and language practice of language carriers in the conditions of public communication. In the last quarter-century, the situation changed dramatically: shifts occur in the use of formulas naming, including patronymic; the recommendations of scientists, relating to the pronunciation of a middle name, contradictory. Indeed, the system of patronymics is experiencing a period of increased mobility. However, its phonetic peculiarity remains unchanged. The choice of the form patronymic - full or contracted – is regulated by the interaction of two major factors – the origin patronymic name to the class of men’s / women’s ones and diversified the parameters of the original name. Significantly, the orthoepic norm middle name refers to the type, where there are no rigid prohibitions, and the principle of «better so, and not otherwise» is working.
