Summary/Abstract: National affairs in the Northeast Slovakia have been complicated for centuries. This area is a home to several ethnic groups and the relations among them have been impacted by a range of long-term conflicts and misunderstandings related to basic questions about identity. Until today the main conflict has been the so-called Ruthenian question, i.e. if the Ruthenians are an independent nation or a sub-ethnic nation of the Ukrainian nation. Throughout the history, there have been advocates of both concepts in this area. The permanent polemics related to this matter many times contributed even to the manipulation with identity and had influence on the neutral ethnic self-identification of the local inhabitants. Complicated ethnic relations were strengthened in the past decades by various processes and tendencies. Even nowadays this problem is full of antagonisms. The objective of this paper is to analyse some aspects related to this topic.
