Summary/Abstract: Between the eleventh and the fourteenth centuries the economy of Latin Christianity went through fundamental and rapid transformations. Obviously, there is a scholarly debate on the direction and the speed of economic development; but some points are clear enough. The population increased, urban centres supported social mobility and there was a massive coinage, too. At a time when feudal society still flourished, there was a concomitant development of basic structures of pre-industrial society, most of which originated around 1300, so that many towns retained their appearance until the nineteenth century. While feudal tenure was still widespread, it appears that in Europe by 1300, such tenures were becoming more like private property.
