Summary/Abstract: The main topic of the paper will be the explanation of how Bulgarian film distribution was shaped in the period from the end of the first decade of the twentieth century to the eve of the First World War. A key precondition for its emergence was the establishment of two large stationary cinemas in Sofia – the Modern Theatre and the Odeon. In their competition for audiences they provide cinema-goers in Sofia with a wide variety of films, presented in conditions and comfort that are not inferior to the average European level. In addition, they contribute to the formation of lasting film interests, the emergence of the cinema press, the introduction of modern methods of advertising, and the sparking of lively public discussions on cinema-related issues. Parallel to this trend, film distribution occupies a central place among the various activities of the film industry.
