Summary/Abstract: STIFTER’s work is truly distinctive, characterized by a two-tier narrative strategy in which an idyllic harmony is repeatedly confronted with fatal reality. These confrontations appear most noticeably as dangerous natural disasters. In his works, STIFTER attempts to find an ideal relationship between man and nature; however, he simultaneously challenges this effort, contrasting the idealized image of nature with the aforementioned clashes with nature’s brutality. This study deals with STIFTER’s changing “nature concept” and the ruptures that accompany particular nature concepts. Concurrently, the study investigates the “nature concept” and “gentle law” (sanftes Gesetz), which is closely related to natural aspects and is, itself, controversial.
