Summary/Abstract: This article explores the topic of alcohol consumption and production in the everyday life of medieval people, as well as its social, cultural, medical and economic significance. The authors present the results of a four-year research project and an international conference on alcoholic beverages as a cultural-historical phenomenon, which covered various aspects of this issue from antiquity to the early modern period. The article also introduces the studies and articles published in this monothematic issue of Historický časopis, which deal with the role of wine and beer in medieval diet, health, law, crime, trade, agriculture, rituals and festivities. The article aims to contribute to the cultural history of alcoholic beverages and the lifestyle of medieval people.
