Summary/Abstract: Interest in reading can be an indicator of literacy or, in general, of the whole educational process. On the other hand, the books owned by the citizens of Timișoara reflect their connection to the Central European world, to which Timișoara belonged in 1716. At the same time, they represent evidence of the material culture and activities of the emerging bourgeoisie. The present study started from the statement of a traveler who visited Banat towards the end of the 18th century, who stated that there was not much reading in Timișoara. By discovering some landmarks related to reading in Timișoara in the 18th century, it is possible to qualify the despairing image sometimes left by travelers’ writings. The article is structured on three levels and briefly describes the school system, the printing presses that operated in the city, and the books in the homes of the bourgeoisie of yesteryear.
