Toward intersections of the non-profit sector, criminal justice, and criminological research

Summary/Abstract: This essay discusses the role of the non-profit sector in the Czech criminal justice system and the criminological research. It focuses on three events that took place in Prague in October and November 2023, which highlighted the importance of artistic programs, gender-specific needs, and lived experience of imprisonment. The author argues that the non-profit sector can produce valuable knowledge and critique from the perspective of those who are affected by crime and punishment, and that criminologists should collaborate more with this sector in order to improve the criminal policy and regulation. The essay also reflects on the challenges and opportunities of such collaboration, and calls for a more equal partnership between the non-profit sector, the academic sector, and the state institutions.
