Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the challenges encountered in the translation of Opowiadania przykładne, by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. The article analyzes the way cultural allusions and intertextual references are translated, whilst striving to respect the original style. The comparison of the original and the translation shows that separating the characteristic features of the original and choosing a specific initial norm helps in determining the priorities, strategies and techniques that the translator intends to follow. Nevertheless, the need to preserve the poetic style of the original often influences the translator’s decisions.
