Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study is to find out which competences acquired in preparatory education are considered necessary by prospective kindergarten teachers for the development of children's mathematical pre-literacy as a component of children’s overall personality development. Quantitative research was carried out in 2022 on a sample of 175 students of the Bachelor's degree in Kindergarten Teaching at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University in Brno. The results of the questionnaire survey showed that the research respondents consider support of the development of children's mathematical pre-literacy to be an important and necessary part of their professional activity. The importance of preparatory university education was identified. In order to be able to develop children's mathematical pre-literacy before they enter school education, students considered necessary, above all, to acquire pedagogical and specific methodological and diagnostic competences. They believed the previous knowledge of mathematics acquired at secondary school and university to be sufficient for professional work in kindergarten and they primarily required topics for the application of suitable activities.
