Summary/Abstract: The case study focused on inquiry-based learning in the combined teaching of mathematics and science in the fifth grade of primary school. In the article, we aimed to reflect on research activity in the context of the prepared curriculum reform in education in Slovak republic, which will deepen interdisciplinary relationships and learning in broader contexts. The research goal was to observe how fifth-grade students work in groups during research activities. We focused on how students gather data, evaluate the measured data using tables and graphs, and present their measured results. In groups, students looked for ways to measure the thickness of a tree trunk using an unconventional measuring tool - a string and evaluate the collected data in tables and graphs. Research question: do different types of trees have different trunk thickness? How does the thickness of a tree trunk relate to the age of the tree? The observation method was supplemented with a questionnaire for students to assess their group work, evaluate the lesson, and their relationship to the subjects of mathematics and science. From the evaluated data, we found that students had difficulties in the research process using the string and in constructing the graph.
