Summary/Abstract: The personal legacy of Evgenije Popović D’Angeli (1842–1931), an Italian irredentist revolutionary and patriot from Trieste, lawyer and journalist of Serbian origin, Garibaldi’s associate, Consul of Montenegro in Rome (1897–1917), preserved in his papers in the Civico Museo di Storia Patria Archive in Trieste, represents a set of precious sources for the history of Italian – South Slavic relations in the 19th and 20th centuries. These sources are also valuable for the history of diplomatic, cultural and political relations of Italy with Serbia and Montenegro, viewed through the plans and thoughts of representatives of Italian diplomacy, journalism and irredentist tradition. That tradition was marked by the action and work of Italian patriots for the liberation of Trento, Trieste and other regions with an Italian population from Austro-Hungarian rule, with whom Popović was a friend and acquaintance for over six decades (1861–1931). The paper presents several letters addressed to Popović written by Vico Mantegazza, Piero Foscari, Eugenio Barbarić and Carlo Cattapani, and their thoughts on the Italian penetration into the Balkans and Serbia and Montenegro, in the context of their visits to these countries, from the late 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, undertaken for the purpose of expanding Italy’s influence in the Balkans. Also underlined is the importance of Popović’s friendship with Senator Salvatore Barzilai (1860–1939), a politician who until 1918 often supported various aspects of the foreign policy of Serbia and Montenegro.
