Summary/Abstract: The novel Retaguardia (1937) is a definitive demonstration of the radical ideological change experienced by Concha Espina during those years which led her to adopt much more traditional positions regarding women’s autonomy and freedom, a central aspect of her work. In this paper, we aim to study the confi guration and role of the female characters in the novel and their relationship to the Falangist premises that the author approached. Th e diff erent fi gures of the mothers, as well as those of the two protagonists, are of special interest. Th ey provide the core of Espina’s novel and the image of Spain that she wants to promote. She off ers an exceptional demonstration of what was expected of women from reactionary positions in the context of the Spanish Civil War, even though her old ideology leads to certain discrepancies from the offi cial discourse.
