Summary/Abstract: The paper is an interpretation of four autobiographical text’s od Wiktor Woroszylski (Materiały do życiorysu (1956); Nasza łódzka młodość (1962), Bez imienia (1976)). They are an example of “set- tling accounts” narrative with the period of post-war communist youth (considered, among other, as a result of the “wartime” childhood). These narratives are told in three moments: the revision- ist period (the “I-we” figure, the belief in the reconstruction of “socialism with a human face”), the sentimental period (the “he-I” figure, mythization, a return to youth) and the oppositional period (“I-castaway” figure, “apostasy”). The meaning of those narratives emerges from the ten- sion between the texts, but also between the narrator and himself-hero, from the interchange- ability of roles and “processuality of knowledge”. These notes are, how Małgorzata Czermińska says, “the trace of mentality imprinted on the text”. The author’s gesture of placing them in one volume is to constitute the final settlement of accounts, and to reconstruct of identity on the irre- ducible gap in the biography. In the article I prove that it is not entirely possible.
