Summary/Abstract: The topic of the National Front and its voluntary organisations did not belong to the priority topics, which related to its subordinate position in the political system of the state socialism (1948–1989). Voluntary organisations were considered in the Stalinist period as transmission agents of the Communist Party. Historians till 1956 fulfilled mostly the role of propagandists providing facts on achieved successes. In the following period, they took over the role of experts during reform planning, a number of them took part in the party politics. They worked on the conception of the pluralist model that took its origins in the idea of the Czechoslovak socialism. After suppression of the Prague Spring movement, the dominant role of the Communist Party was renewed. The attention was paid mostly to the role of the National Front in the dramatic events of February 1948 and during the Prague Spring 1968 (which was valid also for historian both in exile and in dissent). Yet, the analysis of activities of voluntary organisations in the relatively calm periods can open possibilities to interdisciplinary research touching upon essential issues of state socialism workings.
