Summary/Abstract: After 1945, the Czechoslovak archival system dealt with a range of serious problems. Some of them, especially competency disputes of ministerial departments and legislative deficiency were inherited from the inter-war era. Other problems were related to the fact that the archives had to deal with insufficient spaces, a massive influx of documents (closing of institutions, end of Land Administrations, confiscations and the second land reform, seizure of church property etc.). It became obvious that a new central organ for managing the structure of archives would be necessary. After numerous deliberations and disputes, the State Archival Committee was established based on governmental decree from January 25, 1950. Although representatives from different government branches were appointed to the committee, it was dominated by the delegates of the Ministry of Interior; its chairman was Gríša Spurný, the deputy of the Interior Minister. The main task for the committee was to prepare legal regulations on archives structure in the Czechoslovak state, which was issued in 1954 as a governmental decree No. 29/1954 Coll. Based on this, the committee was transformed into the Archives Administration of the Interior Ministry, firmly incorporated in the organisation of this government branch. Other duties of the State Archival Committee consisted in activities of various expert subcommittees (editorial, shredding, for company and business archives, for archival procedures and conservation).
