Summary/Abstract: Chamberlains existed at the Habsburg Court as well as at other rulers‘ and aristocratic courts since long ago in history. An instruction from 1651 for chamberlains of the Emperor Ferdinand III contains thirteen points dealing with service and duties of a chamberlain. Chamberlains were subordinated to the Imperial Royal Office of Highest Chamberlain at the beginning of the 19th century, from 1849 to the Imperial Royal Office of the Highest Hofmeister. A new rank was introduced in December 1848, that of a personal chamberlain (k. k. Leibkammerdiener), yet it did not come into use and was abolished subsequently. Finally, this function was restored in 1864 and from this time to the end of Franz Joseph reign, thirteen personal chamberlains were active at his court. The best-known is Eugen Ketterl, thanks to his edited memoirs.
