Summary/Abstract: In India, the Shah Bano case constituted a historic legal battle centered on how Muslim personal law should be interpreted and applied, particularly with reference to Muslim women’s maintenance rights upon divorce. After 43 years of marriage, Shah Bano, a Muslim woman, got divorced from her husband in 1978. She petitioned her spouse for support under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
