Summary/Abstract: The article presents preliminary remarks on the perception of the monument asan emblematic and stationary ‘gesture’, which has a mediating character in the urban publicspace. The author assumes that the monument serves an intermediating function in varioussymbolic and communication processes in a given open public space, e.g. in a city.
