Summary/Abstract: During the work on organizing non-archived files in the State Archive of Lublin the seal of the City of Lublin was found, which is stamped on two pages of the bifolium containing excerpts from the Lublin city records of 1539. It is round in shape, its diameter being 14 mm. The seal had previously been known only from the description by Marian Gumowski, who saw it before World War Two on a document of 1536 in the Treasury Archive in Warsaw. Now it is known directly from two extant imprints, thereby complementing the compiled catalogue of Lublin’s city seals from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century. The seal belonged to the city’s mayor and is now the oldest known mayor’s seal of Lublin. The matrix of the seal was probably made in the mid-1530s, and its origin may be connected with work of Łukasz of Nowe Miasto, master of liberal arts from University of Cracow, on organizing the activity of the city chancellery. The image of the seal on the extant imprints is well preserved. Its field contains Lublin city’s coat of arms representing a goat on a Renaissance shield, climbing a grapevine. Above the shield there are letters S P L, which indicate the proconsul or Lublin’s mayor as the keeper of the seal.
