Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of foreign capital on Lithuanian commercial banks. The author presents some practical survey results of the foreign banks’ entry, activities, and operation in Lithuania before joining the European Union markets. There are overviewed the main incentives motivating the foreign capital entry from the customer-oriented following to the market-seeking strategies. The host country market specifics, advantages and disadvantages of foreign banks, main target groups, and fields of activities are also discussed. The paper investigates some aspects of the foreign banks’ entry into the banking market based on the study results of Lithuania’s domestic and foreign-owned banks in 2001-2002. Foreign banks’ motives for strategic long-term stay in the host country market, some more important characteristics of banks’ governance and management are also discussed.
