Summary/Abstract: The article contains a review of the research on the selected psychosocial aspects pertaining to the functioning of non-disabled individuals (children, adolescents and adults) who have a sibling with a disability. Its goal is to show how the variables such as: styles of coping with the situation of growing up with a disabled sibling, gender, age and birth order, type and level of disability, socio-economic status and other family characteristics affect the psychosocial functioning of nondisabled siblings and their relationships with a sister or a brother with a disability. The importance of the aforementioned issues in terms of educational practice and support for families experiencing difficulties coexisting with disability has been emphasized. In order to mitigate the long-term effects of family stress, siblings of individuals with disabilities should be professionally helped at various moments in their lives. Nevertheless, more support is required to cater for the needs of nondisabled siblings in smaller, one-parent, and underprivileged families raising children with disabilities.
