Lexical-semantic modelling: advantages and prospects

Summary/Abstract: his article presents the author’s conception of the lexical-semantic modelling of the Ukrainian dialectal space from the abstract model to the actual representation. The fragment of the dialectal worldview – its vertical axis connected with the opposition of concepts top / bottom – was reconstructed on the basis of the lexical-semantic modelling of dialectal phenomena. A systematic approach to the analysis of dialect phenomena was suggested; it is pro- jected on semantics, and above all on the detection of semantic transformations.The importance of the lexical-semantic modelling not only for the analysis of the semantic processes but also for the representation of the cognitive space (the result of which is the modelling of the dialectical worldview) was justified. The main principles and advantages of modelling as a method and the results and prospects of the research are indicated.The sources of the study are historical and regional dictionaries and texts, as well as linguistic atlases. Based on the analysis of historical sources and manuscripts of the Ukrainian language, semantic changes were recorded at different historical stages.
