A Syncretic Perspective on Data Overview in the Studies on the History of Vocabulary. Deliberations Based on Animalistic Lexis

Summary/Abstract: In the article, the author attempts to indicate the benefits that may be derived from a broad overview of historical data, in the studies on diachronic lexicology. It has been assumed that a more complete picture of changes in the field may be obtained, if different overview perspectives and research tools, devised in various semantic and lexicological schools, were applied. Thus, the necessity of using a possibly large number of extra-linguistic historical sources, which would allow for the proper lexical analyses and obstruct the imposition of the contemporary language user’s competences upon the material from years behind, has been emphasised. Furthermore, it has been agreed that such a perspective adopted in the observation of the old material is essential, and does not disrupt the coherence of the research subject description.
