About the Use of Adverbial Phrases in the Intensifier Position – Interpretative Problems

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to a problem of distinguishing intensifiers in texts and differentiating them from adverbs. The process of intensifier’s formation is gradual: for a certain period of time, a particular adverb that performs the intensifying function may appear only contextually. Thus, some contexts in which a given phrase appears may present interpretative problems, as they may be understood in two ways: as a sign of intensification or according to the adverb’s meaning. Lack of any other contexts suggests that the phrase has not taken a form of an independent intensifier. The problem has been illustrated with the word okrutnie [cruelly] and its contextual counterparts.
