Summary/Abstract: The development of new mass media, the observed aging audience at classical music concerts, and the state of Polish music education put before us again the question of both the present state and the future of classical music. Although access to various types of concerts is almost unlimited, and that which is on offer is very attractive, the number of classical music listeners is regularly decreasing, especially in Western Europe, but also in Poland, and the average age of listeners is increasing significantly. The discrepancy between the choice on offer and the number of listeners may lead to drastic changes in the musical preferences of Polish society in the next two decades. This article presents data from the 21st century on the audience of classical music concerts (and similar musical forms) in Poland and comparatively in Germany – statistics on the number of concerts, the number of listeners and the future of the concert market in Poland. An important aspect discussed in this article is the direct relationship between the presence and perception of classical music in human life and early musical socialisation.
