Waar oude gebouwen staan en mooie bomen groeien onder de blauwe hemel… Pronuncation of Dutch Diphthongs and Vowel Sequences by Polish Learners of Dutch

Summary/Abstract: The text analyses the problem of pronunciation of Dutch diphthongs and vowel sequences by Polish learners of Dutch. In the theoretical part the articulation of both diphthongs and vowel sequences in Dutch is described and compared with rather limited ways to combine vowels in Polish to foresee the possible interference/transfer. The discussion follows to give a detailed evaluation of the wide range of errors the Polish speakers make pronouncing the Dutch diphthongs and vowel sequences. The text closes with an attempt to use the results of the error evaluation in the pronunciation training.
