Summary/Abstract: This article consists of two parts: short theoretical admission and the main, empirical part. The author discusses the problem of safety and the fear of crime in modern society, especially in big cities on the example of Warsaw, the biggest Polish city. Several crime prevention programs which have been realized by the police and the municipality in the area of Warsaw are presented. The second part presents the results of questionnaire research which author carried among Warsaw University students. He analyses answers for such questions, as: “Have you been a victim of any crime offence during the last 12 months? If Yes, what kind of crime it was and did you report it to the police?”, “Do you know where the nearest to your residence police station is?”, “Do you know your district policeman?”and many others about the fear of crime and the knowledge of preventive programs. The author concludes that it is impossible to effect fear of crime through the crime prevention programs, if inhabitants do not know them (according to the presented results more than 30% of respondents never heard about any program). It is also quite hard to develop the cooperation between the society and the police (one of the community policy foundations) when 40% of asked students deny that they know the nearest police station and only 3.4% know their district policeman, the so-called first contact policeman.
