Summary/Abstract: This is the first publishing of the manuscript written by the prominent Bulgarian philosopher Dimitar Michalchev (1880-1967). It is a strong polemic philosophical and publicistic text, a fine example of the philosopher’s works. It was written in 1951. Its unique copy is kept in the archive of Valko Chervenkov (1900-1980) – the general secretary of the Bulgarian communist party and Bulgarian prime minister in 1951. “Criticism and Self-defense” was written as a response to the Marxist philosopher Assen Kisselinchev (1905-1960). Kisselinchev systematically attacked the position of Michalchev, who was follower of the German philosopher Johannes Remke (1848-1930). At that time Michalchev was isolated and deprived of his university degrees, making it impossible for him to defend himself publicly against the ideological criticism.“Criticism and Self-defense” is a typical Michalchev’s text attesting to the stability of his philosophical position. It is a testimony of his convictions and dignity during the totalitarian regime.
