Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the historical progress of the school subject called civics in secondary schools in the Czech Republic and its recovery and its scheme after 1989. It briefly refers to the important characteristics due to its transformation in the school curriculum during the socialism, and then, after 1990. Short part of the text is devoted to textbooks and former curriculum documents. The article also briefly presents the role of philosophy in the Czech curriculum in a civics context. The article is financed from the funds of the project "PROM – International scholarship exchange of doctoral students and academic staff" under the Operational Programme Knowledge Education Development, co- financed by the European Social Fund; project no.
