Summary/Abstract: This article is a contribution of its author, Josef Bartoš, to the conference organized by the Regional History Cabinet at the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, Palacký University in Olomouc, on October 23, 2002. After some modifications it is published here under the title “The topography from an historical point of view”. In the beginning of his article author says, that it seems that the era of historical-topographical tools in its present state (those ones printed) is over and it is necessary to settle with new computer and communication instruments. He also criticizes the present reform of territorial administration because of its lack of objective topographical analysis (especially geographical) and its creating illogical disproportions between territorial districts autonomous administration and state administration. The main attention of the article is aimed at new tasks and perspectives of historiography in postmodern times. At overcoming a heritage of schematic structures (so called scientific, sociologic, positivist as well as marxist) in viewing history and its concreteness, complexity, connection with natural and social environment, and importance of a place people live in. Author also calls attention at importance of rational and emotional factors in history, individuality of persons, events and facts in historical research and in often left out form of presentation. Thus, at the end, he underlines a lasting meaning of topographical and historical information.
