Summary/Abstract: In this article, the problem concerning the political transformation in Bulgaria, that took place in the 80s and 90s of the 20th century, is analysed. The above mentioned issue is presented in the context of the typology of communist systems of Herbert Kitschelt, using the concept path dependence. It was established that both in imposing communism and in emerging from it had an impact on the speed and character of democratic transformations in this country, also on the creation and functioning of political parties and the party system.
