Dimensions of Priestly Ministry in the Teaching of Pope Benedict XVI

Summary/Abstract: This article presents the teaching of Pope Benedict XVI on the three dimensions of priestly ministry, i.e. teaching, sanctification and leadership. The author uses texts prepared by the Holy Father while still a cardinal and prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, as well as later texts from the period of his leadership of the Holy See: the apostolic exhortations Sacramentum caritatis and Verbum Domini, homilies, speeches at general audiences and other official meetings. The article is divided into three parts referring to the specific dimensions of priestly service. In each part, the author presents the teachings of Benedict XVI on the theological foun- dations of this activity and the means necessary for its proper implementation. From the analysis of the topic, specific conclusions can be drawn that should be helpful for today’s priests and clergy.
