Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of creating a collection of one artist in The Wiktor Ambroziewicz Chełm Region Museum in Chełm over the decades, based on the works by Roman Śledź from Malinówka. At the background of changes related to the evolution of the view on folk art, the history of collecting sculptures by this artist in the collections of the Ethnography Department is shown. The basis for reconstructing the history of the creation of the collection was the analysis of the books of receipt and inventory of the Ethnography Department, archival documentation regarding purchases and transfers to the Department, conversations with former and current employees, and an interview with the artist. The article is an attempt to determine whether the formal features of the works by the artist from Malinówka influenced the several-year break in collecting the artist’s works or were other factors decisive. An outline of the history of the Department was also presented, which also had a huge impact on the lack of continuity in collecting. In addition, the artist’s work was presented: his search for his own style, artistic path, the formal features of his works were discussed.
