CONTRASTIVE COMPARISON OF ANTHROPONYMS FROM E.T.A. HOFFMANN’S THE NUTCRACKER AND THE MOUSE KING IN GERMAN, SERBIAN AND CROATIAN

Summary/Abstract: Translators face a complex issue when translating anthroponyms in children’s literature: how should they proceed in order to authentically transfer a name’s meanings and functions from one language to another while also making them accessible to young readers? There are various classifications of different strategies for finding equivalents of anthroponyms in the target language. Theo Hermans named four possibilities: reproduction, adaptation, substitution and translation, while also recognizing that omission might occasionally be acceptable. This paper will present a contrastive comparison of anthroponyms found in the Serbian and Croatian translations of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, one of the most important works of German children’s literature, and their equivalents from the original text, in order to determine which of the previously named options was utilized when translating the anthroponyms. Moreover, the goal is also to observe whether the same names were translated in the same manner, or if the translators opted for different solutions and how these differ from one another.
